JAARS is a multidisciplinary team of problem-solvers committed to the belief—and the vision—that people’s lives and communities are transformed as they experience God’s Word in their own language. Bible translation is the goal. And it’s now within reach. Roughly 600 million people speaking roughly 5,000 languages still have little-to-no Scripture in a language they can fully understand. And when they can’t understand what they read or hear, the life-transforming power of the gospel is stopped in its tracks. We’re here to do something about that. A Note About Our Statistics There are a number of ways to assess the current availability of Scripture to people and languages around the world, as well as to understand what is still needed to provide the gospel to “every nation, tribe, people and language” (Revelation 7:9). At JAARS, we are not translators—so we look to those who are for this information. The numbers we are focused on—nearly 600 million people speaking roughly 5,000 languages having less than a full New Testament in the language they understand best—come from research compiled by Wycliffe Global Alliance as seen here. And since our role is to help make Bible translation and language development possible, our focus is not on the number of new translation projects that must be started (although this is obviously critical). Rather, we are driven to provide the years of logistical support many of these off-the-grid projects will need to finish their work and put Scripture into the hands of God’s children.
